Cross Continental Mapping
Small suggestion...
I'm tired of having to go to a (busy) port city in order to get elsewhere on the continent. Maybe an options menu similar to districts for zoning through different towns?
Just an idea

Different Idea: Just make one huge map that includes all 3 continents, the area inbetween, and the Battle Isles.
In other words, something like this:
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/gw...4/47/Tyria.jpg
Or better yet:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/b/b...oBG_Medium.jpg
That way, there won't be need for the little boat.
Or at least combine the Tyria/Elona maps and the Cantha/Battle Isles maps, to reduce the need to go through the extra towns.

The way I wish it worked is that the Travel icon would ask you which different continent you'd want to travel to, and then it would change to that map. Then you could choose where you wanted to go.
A system to allow cross-continental mapping would be the first step in establishing new locations for trading in-game between players. Port cities are the most viable options nowadays simply because of them being the first place a player has to go into before going elsewhere in the continent.

I put the second map in there because it leaves the areas we have not seen on a map blank and therefore leaves room for ANet to put in whatever they want over there for GW2 (and hopefully some GW1 additions *yes, I know they said there will be no more, but how many times have they gone back on their words? A Lot. And this would be for the better if they did*).
@Shayne: Not a bad idea, but having one (or two) much larger maps would serve the same purpose and be a lot less work.

mmmm well Anet wont be doing much at this moment. due to NCsoft being busy with Aion. But MAYBE there might be more to come in future? anyhow leaving open space is a rather good idea.

I have a very crappy comp and it would save me like an 1/2 hour trying to get from one place, to the port town,[especially kamadan] to a area [even more annoying for areas in realm of torment]
P.S it might be tough for ppl with profpheices and factions cuz then it will be weird showing the rest of the country [sort of a spoiler to other games]

Not quite true. ANet is only sponsored by NCSoft. The only thing NCSoft does with ANet is pay them, and marketing. What ANet does with games has little affect by Aion and other things made/sponsored by NCSoft.

And without NCsofts payment Arenanet has very little money to implement new ideas? or maybe I'm wrong who knows.

Perhaps instead of making it one huge map (I don't even want to imagine the load time on that map in a busy city), they could add arrow toggles so that you can switch between maps when zoomed out. That way you can toggle, zoom in on one specific location as usual, and go where you want to.

Now this would be an update of much joy.
The little ship doesn't really annoy me, though. Maybe we could add bookmarks to our ships so they go where we travel more often? xD Would be great if this feature came out in GW2 (;

I've /signed this several times before and I'll do it again.
It's just a matter of a GUI change, should be very simple. Just make it so when you click the Ship icon you get to choose whole continents (Tyria/Cantha/Elona) and it will just display its map.
Oh and the same with the portal to Torment, so you can go straight to DoA from anywhere.
This update would not only save the players a lot of time - loading the heavily populated cities can take time; it would also reduce the the bandwidth usage of the servers - do some tests and you'll see that zoning to busy towns requires more data transfer than anything else (except intense battles with 16+ players and lots of npcs).
Fixed map travelling is also a must if we want to think about a central place for group forming (if we can't hope for global partysearch).
/signed, obv.

ANet is a wholly owned subsidiary of NCSoft. Without NCSoft, ANet does not exist as a company. NCSoft is more than just a publisher for ANet. It is true that NCSoft does not interfere with design decisions in ANet, at least for the most part. NCSoft manages support, and all transactions in the in-game store are with NCSoft as well.
As to this suggestion, I've seen it before, and I'll sign it again. I believe I read somewhere, most probably from Gaile Gray, that the developers stated that it would be difficult to load a different continent map without travel to the primary port city because of game design. I could be wrong, but I think she has replied to this request before.
If loading the maps is a problem, I'd like to see adjacent text menus added to the Travel icon. For example, clicking the travel icon pops up a menu window with "Select Continent/Chapter/Expansion, or Battle Isles," and then an adjacent menu would list all the outposts, or the arenas and Great Temple of Balthazar in the case of Battle Isles. Selecting each outpost in the menu would pop up the window for that outpost with the image and description we see now, along with the district selection menu, and clicking the outpost takes you to the district you select, or default district if no selection is made.
If the menu system I've outlined above can be implemented, I'd also like to see the same applied to the Vortex and Asura Gates, where clicking them opens a menu where you can select the outpost you wish to load directly, rather than Gate of Torment or Boreal Station, respectively.

I really like this idea. It would save lots of time (In reality only a min with my connection but anyway...) I also like the arrow toggle idea too o:

There is no need to make more maps.
Just change the behavior of the existing icons.
Click the boat, click Tyria, Tyrian map show.
Click the boat, click Cantha, Canthan map shown.
Click the boat, click Elona, Elonian map show.
Click the boat, click Battle Isles, Battle Isles map shown.
Click the Vortex from Elona, Torment map show.
Click the Vortex from Torment, Elonian map show.
Click the Asura Gate, Tyrian map shown focused in the North.
That's all that is needed.
